Hokkaido
Hokkaido is a large island located in the northernmost part of Japan, and its capital city is Sapporo. As of the time of writing, it has a population of around five million people and is well known for its vast and beautiful natural scenery.
In winter, Hokkaido receives heavy snowfall, while summers are generally cooler than many other parts of Japan. For many people in Japan, Hokkaido is often associated with pristine nature and snowy landscapes.
In this post, I will introduce some of the memorable places I personally visited, mainly around Sapporo and Otaru.
Sapporo
When people think of Hokkaido, Sapporo is probably the first place that comes to mind. Sapporo is the largest and most vibrant city in Hokkaido, making it a great place to enjoy sightseeing, shopping, and local food all in one place.
Public transportation such as subways and buses is well organized, making it easy to get around the city. Many tourist attractions are also located relatively close to central Sapporo, which made traveling convenient. I was especially impressed by how the city combined urban convenience with Hokkaido’s relaxed atmosphere.
Otaru is a port city located relatively close to Sapporo, and the atmospheric scenery created by its canals and old buildings felt especially charming. Walking slowly through the streets where the past and present coexist, the night view of Otaru in Hokkaido became one of the most beautiful memories of the trip.
