(Otaru Canal)
The Port of Otaru developed as the gateway to the colonization of Hokkaido. As the volume of cargo handled increased and the need for efficient transportation arose, the Otaru Canal was created by reclaiming part of the sea.
오타루항은 홋카이도 개척의 관문으로서 발전해왔습니다. 화물 취급량이 증가하고, 운반 작업을 효율적으로 수행할 필요가 생기면서, 바다를 매립해 만들어진 것이 ‘오타루 운하’입니다.
As times changed, in 1986 (Showa 61), after more than a decade of debate over land reclamation, a portion of the canal was filled in. Half of its width became a road, and it was reborn into its current form, with walking paths and a city park now maintained.
시대가 변하면서, 쇼와 61년(1986년), 10여 년에 걸친 매립을 둘러싼 논쟁 끝에 운하의 일부가 매립되었고, 폭의 절반이 도로가 되었으며, 산책로와 도시 공원이 정비된 지금의 모습으로 새롭게 태어났습니다.
The canal is 1,140 meters long. The section along the Rinko Line of the prefectural road is 20 meters wide, while the northern part (commonly known as the North Canal) retains its original width of 40 meters.
운하의 전체 길이는 1,140미터이며, 도도(道道) 린코선(臨港線)을 따라 이어진 구간은 폭 20미터, 북부(통칭: 북운하)는 원래대로 폭 40미터입니다.
Otaru Canal is a place where you can take a walk along the waterway or enjoy a sightseeing boat ride, and it is one of the most famous tourist destinations in Hokkaido. In spring, you can take a walk while enjoying the cherry blossoms, and in winter, you can view the beautiful, snow-covered scenery of the canal. It is beautiful during the day, but the night canal cruise is especially breathtaking.

There are museums, art galleries, and restaurants near the Otaru Canal promenade. If you buy a cruise ticket on-site, it’s a good idea to walk around the area while waiting for your ride.

Cruises are available every 30 minutes from 10 AM to 8 PM. To ride at your preferred time, book online. There are cruises that include an audio guide system in English, Chinese, and Korean for foreign visitors.

6. About 1 Hour from Sapporo
Otaru Canal is about 40 minutes by car or 1 hour by public transport from central Sapporo. If staying in Sapporo and planning a night cruise, check train schedules in advance.
