About the Book

■Title: The Way Successful People Think (うまくいっている人の考え方)
■Author: Jerry Minchinton (ジェリー・ミンチントン)
■Publisher: Discover 21, Inc. (ディスカヴァー・トゥエンティワン)

Jerry Minchinton is an American author and a self-development and leadership consultant. He previously worked as a pianist and later gained extensive experience in the business world as an entrepreneur. Through this process, he came to recognize that raising one’s self-esteem and having confidence in one’s own value are directly connected to success and happiness in life. Based on this insight, he has continued his work focusing on self-esteem and ways of thinking. He is now devoted to writing self-development books on these themes, and his works have been translated and published in many countries around the world.

This book is a combined edition of two of Jerry Minchinton’s works, based on “52 Things You Can Do to Raise Your Self-Esteem” and “Thinking Better: Keys to Unlock Your Mind.” The former presents 52 practical ways to build self-esteem, focusing on actionable habits that can be applied in daily life. The latter focuses on improving one’s way of thinking, emphasizing that changing thought patterns and perceptions can influence life outcomes. The Japanese edition, “The Way Successful People Think,” is a reconstructed volume that integrates the key ideas of these two books.

Summary

This book is structured around two main themes. The first focuses on accepting oneself as one is, respecting oneself, and building self-esteem. It emphasizes being kind to oneself, believing in one’s own value, and living one’s own life rather than following the standards of others. In other words, it begins with establishing a healthy perception and attitude toward oneself rather than relying on external evaluation.

The second focuses on choosing better ways of thinking. It highlights changing perspectives, thinking positively, and understanding both oneself and others in order to transform one’s thinking habits. Through this, the book conveys that life is not something to be passively accepted, but something that can be shaped through one’s own choices and ways of thinking.

Notable Quotes

Why continue living a life with no dreams or hope? If you dislike your current job, you should consider changing it. Spending each day doing work you dislike is meaningless. Of course, it is not always possible to change jobs immediately. However, that does not mean you should neglect preparing for your future.

■願望を現実に変えるには、願望を抱く以上のことが必要なのだ。何らかの目標を達成したいと真剣に思うなら、それに向けてかなりのエネルギーを注ぐ必要があるのだ。

Turning a desire into reality requires more than simply wishing for it. If you truly want to achieve a goal, you need to invest a considerable amount of energy toward it.

My Thoughts

This is a book I personally came across at a time when I was struggling with many concerns. I had a psychological pressure that I had to be perfect, but after reading this book, I was able to learn how to accept, understand, and love myself as I am. The author explains what self-esteem is and emphasizes the importance of valuing oneself highly. This is because the person who can love and change me the most is ultimately myself.

The book also emphasizes that it is important not only to love and value oneself, but also to recognize and accept others as valuable individuals. It advises maintaining a positive mindset, focusing more on one’s inner self than outward appearances, and at the same time thinking realistically and avoiding relationships that make you unhappy.

The book consists of 100 warm and comforting messages. Rather than being a book to read just once, it is more like a place to return to and rest when you feel mentally exhausted. If you are feeling emotionally drained in modern society, I would recommend this book as a way to build your self-esteem.
