Rilakkuma: Name Origin, Backstory, and Friends
Rilakkuma is a cute and popular character created by the Japanese company San-X.
리락쿠마는 일본의 캐릭터 회사 “산엑스(San-X)”에서 만든 귀여운 인기 캐릭터입니다.
The name “Rilakkuma” is a combination of the Japanese pronunciation of the English word “relax” (リラックス, rirakkusu) and the Japanese word for bear, “kuma” (くま). In other words, it means “relaxed bear.”
이름은 영어 단어 “relax(릴랙스)”의 일본식 발음 “리락쿠스(リラックス)”와, 일본어로 곰을 뜻하는 “쿠마(くま)”가 합쳐져 만들어졌습니다. 즉, “편안한 곰”이라는 의미입니다.
One day, Rilakkuma suddenly shows up at the home of an office worker named Kaoru and just stays there, doing nothing in particular. It’s a mysterious bear in a costume, and no one knows who—or what—is inside. Despite being an uninvited guest, Rilakkuma doesn’t help out much and spends each day lazily lounging around. Apparently, its biggest concerns in life are meals and snacks.
리락쿠마는 어느 날 갑자기 OL(여성 직장인) 카오루 씨의 집에 찾아와 눌러앉은 정체불명의 탈을 쓴 곰입니다. 안에 누가 들어 있는지는 아무도 모르고, 특별히 하는 일도 없이 하루 종일 뒹굴뒹굴, 느긋하게 시간을 보내며 살아갑니다. 리락쿠마의 가장 큰 관심사는 매일의 식사와 간식이라고 해요.
With its adorable face and laid-back attitude, Rilakkuma has become a comforting presence for many people, offering a little moment of healing in the middle of a busy life.
귀여운 얼굴로 소파에 누워 느긋하게 쉬는 리락쿠마의 모습은 바쁜 일상 속 지친 마음에 작은 위로와 힐링을 선사합니다.
It’s also often seen with other beloved characters like the mischievous little bear Korilakkuma and the serious yet caring yellow bird Kiiroitori.
이외에도 장난기 많은 코리락쿠마(꼬마 곰), 깐깐하지만 정 많은 키이로이토리(노란 새) 등의 친구들도 함께 많은 사랑을 받고 있습니다.

I visited Abeno Q’s Mall in Osaka to experience the limited-time Rilakkuma Café, celebrating the character’s 15th anniversary.
리락쿠마 15주년을 기념한 기간 한정 카페에 가기 위해 오사카 아베노 큐즈몰을 찾았습니다.
From the outside, Rilakkuma and friends were already welcoming us with their adorable decorations, setting the mood even before we stepped in. Although the café operated on a reservation and time-slot basis, many people were already waiting in line.
외관부터 리락쿠마와 친구들이 귀엽게 반겨주고 있어, 입장 전부터 설레는 분위기였습니다. 사전 예약제로 운영되고, 입장 시간도 정해져 있었지만 벌써 많은 사람들이 줄을 서 있었습니다.

You can enjoy meal options like Kiiroitori-shaped omurice and pink curry udon topped with Korilakkuma, as well as an adorable selection of colorful desserts and drinks that almost felt too cute to eat.
키이로이토리 모양의 오므라이스, 코리락쿠마가 올라간 핑크 카레 우동처럼 식사 메뉴도 준비되어 있으며, 컬러풀하고 먹기 아까울 정도로 귀여운 디저트와 음료들도 다양하게 제공되고 있었습니다.
Every item on the menu is character-themed, making the experience as fun to look at as it is to taste.
모든 메뉴가 캐릭터 테마로 꾸며져 있어 보는 것만으로도 즐거웠습니다.
The interior was even cuter than I expected, beautifully decorated with Rilakkuma details everywhere. It truly felt like stepping into a Rilakkuma storybook world.
내부는 기대 이상으로 귀엽고, 리락쿠마 테마로 정말 정성스럽게 꾸며져 있었습니다. 마치 리락쿠마 동화 속 세계에 들어온 듯한 착각이 들 정도로 몰입감이 뛰어났습니다.
In one corner of the café, a variety of limited-edition goods were also available for purchase, adding to the fun of the visit.
한쪽 코너에서는 카페 한정 굿즈도 다양하게 판매되고 있어 구경하는 재미도 쏠쏠했습니다.
Since I visited around lunchtime, I ordered the Rilakkuma burger and Kiiroitori omurice. Both were so cute that I almost felt bad eating them, and the character designs were beautifully done.
점심시간쯤 카페를 방문해서, 리락쿠마 햄버거와 키이로이토리 오므라이스를 주문했습니다. 둘 다 먹기 미안할 정도로 귀여웠고, 캐릭터의 특징을 잘 살린 비주얼이 인상적이었습니다.
What I love about character cafés in Japan is how creatively they bring joy to fans through thoughtful themes and adorable presentation.
