Hokkaido Travel | Otaru Canal: A Beautiful Stroll in Northern Japan

小樽運河
(Otaru Canal)

The Port of Otaru developed as the gateway to the colonization of Hokkaido. As the volume of cargo handled increased and the need for efficient transportation arose, the Otaru Canal was created by reclaiming part of the sea.

As times changed, in 1986 (Showa 61), after more than a decade of debate over land reclamation, a portion of the canal was filled in. Half of its width became a road, and it was reborn into its current form, with walking paths and a city park now maintained.

The canal is 1,140 meters long. The section along the Rinko Line of the prefectural road is 20 meters wide, while the northern part (commonly known as the North Canal) retains its original width of 40 meters.

Otaru Canal is a place where you can take a walk along the waterway or enjoy a sightseeing boat ride, and it is one of the most famous tourist destinations in Hokkaido. In spring, you can take a walk while enjoying the cherry blossoms, and in winter, you can view the beautiful, snow-covered scenery of the canal. It is beautiful during the day, but the night canal cruise is especially breathtaking.

I bought a ticket at the on-site counter to take the Otaru Canal cruise. Since I had a bit of time before boarding, I took a leisurely walk around the canal area.

A well-maintained walking path runs along the Otaru Canal. The combination of the elegant stone warehouses and the gently flowing water was truly impressive, and I could feel the long history of the Otaru Canal as I walked.

Strolling around while waiting for the cruise made me appreciate the relaxing pace of the trip even more.

Otaru is known not only for its beautiful canal but also for its glass craftsmanship.
Located next to the Otaru Canal, the hands-on studio il PONTE offers both glass and leather goods for sale, and also provides crafting experiences.

Unfortunately, I didn’t make a reservation in advance, so I wasn’t able to try it myself. However, creating a lovely glass cup with a local artisan could be a wonderful souvenir of your trip to Otaru.

As of the date of this post, il PONTE is open year-round except during the New Year holidays, from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The glass crafting experience costs 4,400 yen per person.

There are many beautiful buildings around the Otaru Canal that resemble medieval European architecture. Among them, HOTEL NORD OTARU, located right in front of the canal, stands out with its elegant European-style exterior and offers a great location to stay during your visit to Otaru.

While taking a night cruise, I passed by the hotel, and its brightly illuminated facade against the dark night sky was truly stunning and unforgettable.

The Otaru Canal cruise is a 40-minute sightseeing course that slowly travels along the canal, allowing you to enjoy the scenery of Otaru. It operates every 30 minutes from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

To board at your preferred time according to your travel schedule, online reservations are recommended. Tickets are also available on-site, but be aware that popular time slots may sell out quickly.

In addition, some cruises include an audio guide system available in English, Chinese, and Korean, so you can enjoy learning about the history and landmarks of the Otaru Canal during your ride.

The canal is beautiful both during the day and at night, each offering a different kind of charm. I took a walk around the area in the daytime and boarded the cruise in the evening.

Although it was the same place, the canal I saw while walking under the bright sunlight and the view from the boat under the soft evening lights felt completely different—both were truly beautiful and left a deep impression.

Tips for Enjoying the Otaru Canal to the Fullest

1. Enjoy a Walk Along Otaru Canal
There are museums, art galleries, and restaurants near the Otaru Canal promenade. If you buy a cruise ticket on-site, it’s a good idea to walk around the area while waiting for your ride.

2. Different Charms of Day and Night Views
The canal is great for photos during the day with historic buildings and reflections on the water, while gas lamps at night create a romantic mood. Try to see both if you can.

3. A Special Winter Scene
In winter, the snow-covered canal is quiet and magical. Especially during the Otaru Snow Light Path Festival in early February, candles line the canal, attracting many visitors. Book in advance if visiting then.

4. Photo Spot: Old Nippon Yusen Warehouse
The most famous photo spot is in front of the old Nippon Yusen warehouse, often featured on postcards. Visit before or after your cruise, especially at sunset for great lighting.

5. About 1 Hour from Sapporo
Otaru Canal is about 40 minutes by car or 1 hour by public transport from central Sapporo. If staying in Sapporo and planning a night cruise, check train schedules in advance.
